Muhammed Enes Topgül

Born in 1984 in Fatih, Istanbul, Muhammed Enes Topgül completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Theology of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. He received his Master’s degree from Marmara University Faculty of Theology, Department of Hadith, with a thesis entitled “The Tendency Towards Shi’ism in Hadith Narrators” (2008). He worked as a research specialist at the Islamic Studies Centre of the Turkish Religious Foundation (İSAM) for one year (2012- 2013). In 2013, he was appointed as a research assistant at the Faculty of Theology of Marmara University. He completed his Ph.D. in the Department of Hadith with a dissertation entitled “The Early Shi’a Science of Rijāl: The Case of al-Kashshī” (2015). He spent a year as a visiting scholar at the University of Illinois in the USA (2018-2019). He was awarded the title of associate professor in 2020. In addition to his translations of classical works by Imams al-Shafi’i, al-Bayhaqī, and al-Suyūṭī, as well as modern works in Arabic and English, Topgül has published several notable works. These include his doctoral thesis and the works Reading Between the Lines of the Isnād (2018), From Narration to Narrator: How the Jarh-Ta‘dīl Expressions Were Formulated? (2019), and Reading the Isnād (2022), Scholars, Live Sessions, and Hadith Narrators: The Making of Lisān al-Mīzān by Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī and His Entourage (2024).
